It is Not What we Take Up, but What we Give Up
I’m not a war hero... or even a person that involuntarily makes sacrifices for others. I've never lived by the words of Martin Luther King, " Life's most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" That doesn't make me a bad person, just normal.
However, in light of the upcoming elections and my "strong opposition to the Republicans I decided to challege myself and do something I believe in. I took this challenge head on and find myself helping to spread the beliefs of the Democratic Party, even launching a durable, unadulterated Dems Abroad Korea. Giving myself the pleasure of knowing I helped contribute to kicking out those right-wing Republicans in the 2006/2008 elections, respectively. Please, no applause.
I l0ve being a part of Dems Abroad Korea. Yet, Korea is such a transient country, no one wants to make a commitment, a bit unfortunate for DAK. Therefore, I find myself being a large majority of the representation for DAK in Seoul… and I’m racking my brains on how to obtain members. I’m succeeding, but I need to do more. That is why & how I find myself making a personal sacrifice to better America.
Yes, I am a self-proclaimed Internet junkie, in spite of that, I have come to the conclusion not all advertising/marketing should be done through forums, myspace, blogs….what DAK needs is face to face contact. For that reason, I’m going to take the plunge, get out into the world and join, join, join; organizations, clubs, chapters...whatever is out there. Including the mother of all establishments, it is so perfect for my new marketing scheme that it succeeds merely upon in person interaction & networking. This org. is the American Chamber of Commerce, I can already see myself rubbing elbows with some big time businessmen in Korea (crossing my fingers they’re not all Republicans) while utilizing my grace & charm, with DAK off and running in no time.
But isn't there’s always a catch, mine, the budget I work with. It's a bit less than desirable, the exact amount being 0. Of course, all these organizations, AmCham included, require tons of $$$ or won to join their exclusiveness. Korea, this is where I reveal my sacrifice, NO DRINKING FOR 8 WEEKS!
I find my abstinence to alcohol will effectively balance the costs, allowing me to save money to pay pricey membership fees. Also, I “occasionally” find it hard to use self-restraint at bars and “may possibly” end up drunk. Therefore, my newfound discipline of not drinking will enhance my interaction skills i.e. not slurring my words, rambling on aimlessly, or causing my verbal communication to be utterly incomprehensible, really permitting me to shine, while gaining both credibility & members.
Now, I’ve been know to give into temptation, ok more like.. go at it with full force. Oh no, Not this time, my guard is up, I guarantee I Will Not Drink for 8 Weeks. It doesn’t matter whether I’m at a bar, a friend’s apartment, or dinner I Will Not Drink. Go ahead, tempt me… it won’t work, my mind is made up, unlike Washington today, I will not be swayed by generous offers. I am so confident that I will succeed; I personally am putting down 50,000 won if I drink. That’s right; if you see me drinking I will pay 50,000 won on the spot.
So America I hope I can inspire others to forfeit something highly valued, in an effort to better our country.
